As you know over the last few months, I have been writing about the book I was reading for my online grade 12 English class: lullabies for little criminals by Heather O’Neill. I have analysed the text in reader response theory, archetypal theory, and feminist theory. And now we have the final project with this book which is to create a portfolio of work that reflects my analysis of this book in a feminist theory.

Now here is my plan.

We have to create four pieces of work, whether it is written or media based, and use those to show my analysis of lullabies for little criminals by Heather O’Neill. One thing that I found slightly surprising in my book was that there were hardly any female characters aside from the main character Baby. This mean that she grew up in a male dominated world. I believe that if Baby’s mother was still alive or if there was a strong female character in the book that was close to Baby, her life would have been different. Baby didn’t have any women in her life to show her that she can be a strong independent woman, and that she doesn’t need a man to give her life purpose, nor does she need a man in her life.

The four pieces that I am thinking about writing/creating are an argumentative essay, a blog post, a concept map, and a remix photo. I plan on using each of there platforms to represent the different components to my analysis.

The reason I chose the argumentative essay is because I feel like I will be able to get my opinion across that Baby would have benefited from having a strong female character that she was close to. This will be to show why I feel this way and provide examples to further help my reasoning.

I chose the blog post because I absolutely love writing them, and this would create a conversation. I would use this platform to speak about the empowering women throughout history and how they have helped us get to where we are, as well as the way women were treated/viewed throughout history. After going through the history, I would identify what point in time matches up best with how Baby was treated throughout her life.

I am excited to make the concept map because that is how my brain works when I am trying to make a decision or figure something out. This will allow me to visually see how the ideas/events/people connect, and what affect they might have. I would use this platform to show how the events that happened in the beginning of the novel lead to the way that Baby’s life evolved.

Now for the one I am really excited for: The remix. With this I can be a little more creative. I would make an image, possibly a comparison of Baby in a ‘before and after’ and how I imagined she would look. On the left half of the photo have it where she is the girl represented in the book, and on the right half of the photo she is how I would Imagine her if there was a strong female character that she could look up to and get advice from. I would do this as a drawing instead of a photo remix because I am currently in art school and I think that this would be the most effective way for me to complete this part of the portfolio. I am excited for the remix because I have never made anything like this before. I am excited for the challenge that I will have creating this and figuring out how I will make this effective. Any suggestions for how I could go about this, or if my idea may work?

Throughout this course, I have grown as a writer; I am now able to effectively articulate my thoughts ideas and opinions. I am now able to actually analyse a text without merely skimming the surface and giving a summary of the book. Now I am able to delve deeper and find out the meaning behind something and how this is important/the reason as to why something happened the way it did, or at least my theory on why.
